It had been widely believed for centuries that hair had great meaning and mystic properties. It was said that to give to someone a lock of your hair meant that you trust them with your life. In the seventeenth century, goldsmiths in Europe and the American Colonies crafted wedding rings that held within them a bit of woven hair from each of the wedding couple. In a romantic gesture they gave to each other a symbol of that trust.
